I'd say that in some cultures a lot of progress has been made in recent decades towards equality between men and women, although there's still some way to go. In other cultures, I think attitudes towards women haven't changed for centuries and women are still treated as inferiors.
Even in the Western world, the very fact that we need to have 'Women's Equality Day' suggests that men and women are still not equal. 'Equality Days' exist to highlight inequalities in society, and when there are no more inequalities that need addressing we won't need 'Equality Days' any more.
